Wind Power in Antarctica

New Zealand's Scott Base Wind Turbines

I was talking to my Mom on the phone this morning and she inquired about the use of wind power in Antarctica, so I thought it would be a good topic for a blog post. There are currently three bases on the continent that have installed wind turbines. These include the New Zealand Scott Base, the Belgian Princess Elisabeth Station and the Australian Mawson Base. See the following links for information on each of these renewable energy programs.

From what I have heard, the New Zealand 3 turbine installation provides enough energy to power all of Scott Base and about 18% of the US McMurdo Station (the US and New Zealand programs share a lot of resources due to the close proximity of the two).

  2. Kia,

Haha, no they are not GE or Vestas (my husband works for Vestas) wind turbines. They are smaller than what GE and Vestas produce. I believe that it is a New Zealand company that manufactures them.
