The Land of the Kiwi

After many hours of being in the air, we are finally on the ground (well the sheep had to clear off the runway first) in beautiful New Zealand. It is about 75 deg and sunny in Christchurch today. Matthew, Shelley and I had a chance to walk around town this afternoon. The city is a mixture of old architecture and modern architecture, which gives the city a welcoming feel. There are many parks around the city and we plan to walk through the Botanical gardens on the way to dinner tonight. I know that my Mom will be jealous of this. I will have to take some pictures.

Before leaving for this trip, I was heavily warned that things never go as planned. After landing, the shuttle from the airport brought us to the Antarctic Center and we found out that our flight for Saturday was overbooked. Therefore, we are now deploying to the ice tomorrow. We had all of our clothing issued to us today. I think that I need to be about 5 inches taller, because my big red parka comes down to my knees. It's pretty funny.

Well I am off to enjoy what I can of New Zealand and the warm weather before heading south tomorrow.

Miss you all!
Melis
